They are a migrant Muslim trading community of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, their name meaning newcomer, tracing descent from an ancestor of the Prophet Muhammad. Business and government service remain their main occupations. They are an Indigenous people in the Urdu people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Konkani and their primary religion is Sunni Islam.
