They are a sub‑group of the Mala community, which is a major Scheduled Caste (Dalit) group in South India, especially in the Telugu‑speaking regions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. They are an Indigenous people in the Telugu people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary language is Telugu and their primary religion is Hinduism.
