They are a Dalit (Scheduled Caste) community of eastern and central India, traditionally associated with stone‑working, especially the making of hand‑mills and grinding stones used in agriculture and households. They are an Indigenous people, in the Odia people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Odia.
