They are an Indigenous tribal community (Adivasi) of central‑eastern India, recognized as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) under the Indian Constitution. They are traditionally forest‑dwelling people, closely connected to land, forests, and agriculture and wage labor. They are an Indigenous people, in the South Asian Tribal people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Bengali.
