They are a diverse South Asian community whose name originally meant religious yogis, but today usually refers to hereditary caste groups historically tied to folk religious service and mendicant roles, with social status and identity varying by region. They are an Indigenous people, in the Jogi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Tulu.
