They are described as a diverse South Asian community whose name originally meant religious yogis, but today usually refers to hereditary caste groups historically tied to folk religious service and mendicant roles, with social status and identity varying by region They are an Indigenous people, with Jogi as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Jogi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Bengali.
