They are described as a Tamil-speaking community of southern India that transformed from a historically marginalized palm-cultivating and toddy-tapping population into one of the most economically successful and socially influential communities in Tamil Nadu They are an Indigenous people, with Nadar as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Tamil people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Hinduism. They primarily speak Tamil.
