They are described as a Scheduled Caste of Odisha concentrated in Mayurbhanj district, traditionally engaged in pig-rearing, with animal husbandry and wage labor as secondary occupations.
They are an Indigenous people in the Bengali people cluster of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc.
Odia is their primary language and Hinduism is their primary religion.
