They are described as an ethnolinguisic subgroup of the Zapotec, an ethnic group indigenous to the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. They are also known as Zapoteco Serrano del Sureste Alto.
They are an Indigenous people in the Zapotec people cluster of the Latin American and Caribbean Peoples affinity bloc.
Zapotec, Tabaa is their primary language and Folk Catholicism is their primary religion.
