They are described as a subgroup of the Pan Yao branch of the Yao ethnic group of southwestern China and can also be known as Pan Yao.
They are an Indigenous people, with Yao (Iu Mien) as their ethnic/kinship group and are in the Yao-Mien people cluster of the Southeast Asian Peoples.
Their primary religion is Ethnoreligion.
They primarily speak Iu Mien.
