Nuristan is a region in Afghanistan, south of the Hindu Kush valleys. The Nuristani people are an ethnic group whose ancestors practiced an ancient Indo-Iranian polytheistic religion until they were conquered and converted to Islam in the late 19th century. The Nuristani do not have a formal tribal structure, however they designate themselves by the names of the local regions they are from.
